Cassette decks, portable stereos, VCRs, home computers, and electronic gadgets filled living rooms. People were spending money to entertain themselves.

Mail-order companies like DAK fed the appetite. Before internet shopping, finding an unusual gadget could mean hunting through magazines and catalogs. Toll-free numbers and credit cards made ordering easier.

DAK had a knack for finding interesting products, explaining what made them tick, and offering low prices. The economy grew 7.3% in 1984, and consumers were snapping up durable goods.

VCRs, Walkmans, and personal computers gave people new ways to entertain themselves at home. Meanwhile, the 1960s were making a comeback.

Lava lamps had arrived in America in 1965, enjoyed their psychedelic heyday, and fallen out of fashion. Then sales reportedly jumped 40% in 1984.

Older buyers remembered them from their youth. Younger buyers discovered these bubbling contraptions for the first time.

DAK had an audience that loved gadgets, money changing hands, and an old novelty gaining attention again.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿: Buy ten high-bias cassette tapes at $4.50 each, and you could add the lava lamp for $9.
