One of my NLP/Hypnosis mentors asked everyone to write down every identity they claimed: writer, coach, entrepreneur, artist, healer, everything. The lists got long.
Then he gave one instruction: cross out any title you could not support with something you had actually done in the last 30 days.
The exercise was meant to separate self-delusion from evidence.
A label can make you feel like the kind of person who does the work before you have done it. “Writer” can become a substitute for writing. “Coach” can become a substitute for coaching. The identity feeds the ego, and the ego lowers the pressure to earn it.
Your identity needs recent, real world evidence. Keep the title you want to grow into, but until your recent actions can support it, treat it as a direction, not a finished fact.
Do the exercise yourself.
Write down “Titles I claim” and “Evidence from the last 30 days.” Cross out unsupported titles, not forever, just for now. Then choose one title you want to earn and schedule one concrete receipt for it this week.
