In The Bad Seed (1956), eight-year-old Rhoda Penmark looks like every parent’s dream. She’s polite, well-dressed, and charming when she wants to be.

She’s also a calculating murderer.

That’s what makes the story disturbing. We associate childhood with innocence, not cold-blooded killing. Rhoda violates that expectation, making her more unsettling than an ordinary villain.

The same mechanism, expectation reversal, can create curiosity in copywriting. When something contradicts what readers believe, they want to know why.

Suppose you open an email with this:

How could the employee bringing in the most revenue be holding the company back?

He controls major client relationships, handles difficult negotiations, and keeps essential information in his head. Nobody else knows enough to take over.

He’s indispensable. And that’s the problem.

If he leaves, much of the business could leave with him.

The contradiction turns an ordinary business problem into something worth investigating.

Try this with your own writing:

1. List five things your prospects consider advantages: more traffic, more leads, lower prices, faster production, higher response rates.

2. Identify circumstances where an advantage becomes a liability.

3. Open with the contradiction, then explain why it’s true.

For example: โ€œThe discount that increased sales also destroyed the company’s profits.โ€

Find the hidden disadvantage inside something your readers consider an advantage. You may have your next hook.
