Science YouTuber Hank Green faced backlash after using a phrase viewers suspected was AI-generated. He deleted an initial response, then apologized in a video, admitting that LLMs had become a crutch.
The controversy raised a larger question: would he lead his audience through the debate, or allow its loudest faction to define his position?
Sun Tzu described the “dissipating stage” as the point when a campaign faces outside criticism and threats. The correct response is not prolonged self-defense, but a quick and appropriate adjustment to the situation.
Green’s repeated responses may have communicated sincerity, but they also accepted his critics’ premise: that using an LLM was itself a grave moral sin, requiring repentance.
Strategically, this created three disadvantages:
First, he surrendered the frame. Instead of defining responsible AI use, he allowed his loudest critics to portray all AI use as suspect.
Second, he magnified the incident. Deleting one statement and issuing another suggested that the original mistake threatened his identity and credibility.
Third, he weakened command. In Tzu’s framework, command means making decisions that direct and protect a position. Leadership requires showing that you understand the conditions and know how to respond.
Should Green have ignored the criticism? No. Listening is central to Tzu’s strategic system. The mistake was not listening, but treating the loudest reaction as the entire strategic landscape.
A stronger response would have been one clear statement: “I used language that did not sound like me, and I should have reviewed it more carefully. I do not believe that using an LLM is inherently incompatible with science communication. I do believe its use requires judgment, verification, and transparency.”
He then should have returned to his strongest terrain: his established role as a science educator. His task was to help viewers examine new technology critically, neither worshipping it nor condemning it absolutely. That approach would have protected his relationship with the audience without surrendering leadership.
